SBA and AARP Partner to Support Older Entrepreneurs

Published Thursday May 31, 2012

The U.S. Small Business Association (SBA) and AARP recently partnered to launch a strategic alliance to provide counseling and training resources for encore entrepreneurs-individuals over the age of 50 interested in starting a small business. Together, the organizations offer online training courses and a network of business mentors across the country to aid older entrepreneurs. SBA and AARP expect to train 100,000 people through the resource program, according to a SBA press release.

No matter what your age, if you have an idea or a business that's ready to move to the next level, the SBA wants to make sure you have access to the tools you need to start and grow, says SBA Administrator Karen Mills. We know that working side-by-side with AARP, we will be able to reach baby boomers and Americans over the age of 50 who are ideally positioned to step out and become their own boss.

The initiative specifically includes a web page (www.sba.gov/content/50-entrepreneurs) dedicated to over-50 entrepreneurs that features an online self-assessment tool, business planning information, professional counseling and financial services, and information on local resources in the entrepreneur's area. The organizations also offer a customized online course and webinar series, found at www.sba.gov/training.

Says Mills, For many older entrepreneurs, starting a small business can be an opportunity to transform a lifetime hobby or interest or years of professional experience into a lucrative line of work.
