The Private 100 are an economic force in the state, but the data from this year’s class shows the recovery is still tenuous. Collectively, the Private 100 posted revenues of $42.1 billion in 2013—down more than $2 billion from 2012 and more than $4 billion from 2011. The good news is more than half of the Private 100—60 percent—expect to expand their businesses in 2014 (as opposed to 42 percent last year), adding more than 1,000 jobs. Most of those are estimating  that will translate into modest growth in their workforce, though only a handful—Colwen Management, The Common Man, CruCon Cruise Outlet, Margaritas Mexican Restaurants and TURBOCAM International—estimating they will add 50 or more jobs in the coming year.

Overall, the number of companies reporting increased revenues during the past three years remained flat at 84 percent from last year.  This year 14 companies are making their debut on the list, and three have made their way back onto the list after a hiatus.  Among those making their first appearance is cover company McClellan Automation Systems, which was among our 10 to Watch last year.

This is the second consecutive year that the fastest growing company on the Private 100 is led by a firm named to the 10 to Watch list in the previous year. Red-hot tech company Dyn rocketed onto the Private 100 list last year with a three-year average revenue growth of 71 percent. This year we watched McClellan do the same with a whopping 372 percent growth rate between 2011 and 2013.

Since gracing last year’s cover, Dyn has adjusted its policies and no longer shares financial data outside the company and thus could not be ranked on this year’s list. However, in July, Dyn announced it has achieved 22 successive quarters of revenue growth since 2009 and saw 52 percent revenue growth in its second quarter over the same time period in 2013.

The Top 100 by the Numbers

Here’s a statistical look at the Class of 2014:

• Collectively, the Private 100 employ 41,530 full time worldwide and 9,420 part time, for a total of 50,950 jobs.

• Family businesses represent 52 percent of the companies on the list.

• 9 percent of the Private 100 have more than 1,000 employees, while 23 percent have fewer than 100.

• 11 percent of the Private 100 are led by women, up from 9 percent last year.

• 10 percent of the Private 100 are more than 100 years old, while only 3 percent have been in business for a decade or less.

Who’s doing well? Of the top 20 fastest growing companies on the Private 100, six are in retail/wholesale, four are manufacturers, four are in various service industries and two each are in IT, finance, and construction.
