What Your Halloween Costume Says About You in the Office

Published Friday Oct 28, 2016

You walk into your office Halloween party dressed as Frankenstein. What do you think your costume is saying to your office buddies about your personality?

(Hint: Apparently it says you're the wise guy or gal at the office.)

To explore this question, Pollfish, a mobile survey company, asked 1,000 Americans to share their Halloween dress-up plans, and found interesting connections to the workplace.

So... what does your Halloween costume say about your office personality?

* Halloween Costume #1: SUPERHERO
If you're dressing up as Superman, chances are you're the "class clown" of the office. According to the survey, 1 in 3 respondents who plan to dress as a superhero self-identify as workplace jokesters. The office "cheerleader" (5 percent) is least likely to dress as a superhero. (If you're the "cheerleader," you're already the superhero of the office!).

* Halloween Costume #1: POP CULTURE-RELATED
Planning to go as Lady Gaga to this year's Halloween event? Then you're probably "the leader" in your workplace. Twenty-five percent of employees whose Halloween costumes are inspired by pop culture identify themselves as the office leader. Could it be because they're trendsetters and just like all eyes focused on them?

* Halloween Costume #2: DIY
If you plan to break the mold by creating your own costume on Halloween, there's a 1 in 4 chance that you're also "the leader" of the office. That comes as no surprise—leadership requires creativity and initiative that other office personalities may not be able to pull off.

* Halloween Costume #3: TRADITIONAL HALLOWEEN CHARACTER
If you're going as a zombie, vampire, ghost, mummy, or other traditional Halloween character, there's a 21 percent likelihood that you're the office "wise guy (or gal)." Only 1 percent of traditional Halloween characters claim to be the office gossip.

* Halloween Costume #4: ANIMAL
Will you be wearing ears and a tail for Halloween? Chances are, you're "the shy one" of the office. According to the survey, 1 in 3 people dressing as an animal for Halloween self-identify as shy. Interestingly, not a single animal you meet at your office party is likely to be the office "wise guy (or gal)."

* Halloween Costume #5: POLITICIAN
This year, politician is the least popular Halloween costume overall, with just 4 percent of Americans planning to dress as Hillary or Trump. If you are one of those few people, there's a 25 percent chance you're one of the "class clowns."

* Halloween Costume #6: HISTORICAL FIGURE
If you're dressing up as Cleopatra, Abraham Lincoln, or another historical figure, you just might be shy. The survey says 36 percent of Americans dressing as a historical figure self-identify as "the shy one" of the workplace.

* Halloween Costume #7: SOMEONE IN PUBLIC SERVICE
Planning to dress up as a nurse, firefighter, or police officer? According to the survey, there's a 32 percent chance you're also "the shy one" of the office.

The Pollfish survey reports that 72 percent of American companies encourage dressing up for holidays and festive events such as Halloween. In addition, 61 percent of Americans report that their bosses dress up for Halloween. The million-dollar question is: What does your boss' costume say about his/her personality?
