This Week’s Spotlight: Jewell Instruments in Manchester—a manufacturer and distributor of sensors and controls, meters and avionics, and industrial test equipment—acquired the assets of Gem Electronics in Connecticut, a provider of equipment and consumables for security system installations. Included in the purchase are several market exclusivities for Gem Electronics products and technology for an advanced line of terminations, connectors, baluns, boosters, converters, hubs and switches. The Gem products will become part of Jewell’s Triplett Test Equipment and Tools division.

Construction is on schedule for Access Sports Medicine’s new ambulatory surgical center in Auburn, which broke ground on May 12 and is expected to open later this year. Additionally, the company hired its first employee at the new location, bringing on Kellie Drake as nurse administrator. Drake has nearly three decades of experience in surgical services.

Catholic Medical Center in Manchester received its first residents training to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. Three 2nd-year Dartmouth-Hitchcock OB/GYN residents will begin caring for CMC patients on the Mom’s Place, a family-centered birthing program. This residency program is a first for CMC and builds on a long-standing maternal care partnership with Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

The Center for Women & Enterprise, which has offices in Nashua, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, received a grant from the AARP Foundation to fund workshops in NH, eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The program will aim to help vulnerable older adults assess opportunities for self-employment, build skills and connect with resources that will enable them to generate income by working for themselves.

Child and Family Services in Manchester hired Colleen Ives as VP of programs. Ives was previously VP of operations and quality control for the Rockport Mortgage Corporation in Massachusetts.

Hyndsight Vision Systems in Peterborough, a manufacturer and distributor of wireless camera and monitor systems, received four gold medals and a best in show designation at INPEX in Pittsburgh, the country’s largest invention trade show. Hyndsight’s best in show win came with a $7,500 prize.

Martin, Lord & Osman in Laconia donated $5,000 toward the Colonial Theater project, a redevelopment effort of the 609 Main St. block in Laconia.

The company offers communications and marketing services for clients in the telecom, energy, health care, retail, hospitality, high tech, finance, government and nonprofit sectors.

Bruce King, president and CEO of New London Hospital, was elected to the board of directors for the NH Fiscal Policy Institute in Concord. King has more than 30 years of experience in health care finance and administration in NH.

Bob Marchewka of One Commercial Real Estate in Portsmouth represented Scott and Karen Logan in their lease of 409 The Hill, a property in downtown Portsmouth and the previous location of their business, the Blue Mermaid Restaurant. The couple leased the 4,000-square-foot property to Tom and Jenny Nelson, who will be renovating the building and opening a new restaurant on The Hill this summer.
