NH's Class of 2014 Joy Noyes

Published Monday Aug 25, 2014

In recent years, there’s been increased concern by state leaders about whether NH can keep its best and brightest. With the help of the NH College and University Council in Concord, Business NH Magazine checked in with colleges and universities around the state to find out what their top students are planning. Here’s what one graduate reported back to us.

Joy Noyes, Granite State College

Hometown: Albany, NH

Degree Earned: BA in Individualized Studies and English Language Arts with a minor in Adult Learning and Development

GPA: 4.0

Career Aspirations: To continue working in higher education and eventually teach at the collegiate level.

Graduate School: I just finished my first graduate course. I am pursuing a Master of Education and Instruction from Plymouth State University.

Have you landed a job? When I started my bachelor’s degree, I was working in banking but I knew that I wanted to teach. Through working with my advisor, I eventually realized that I was most interested in teaching adults. Soon after setting this goal, I saw that an opportunity for an admission coach position opened up at Granite State College and with my bachelor’s degree on the horizon, I was able to get the job.

Why stay in NH? I chose Granite State College because I am committed to staying in NH. At first I knew I wanted to go to college, but I didn’t think that the timing was right because I have a husband, four children, and I work full-time. I considered making a commute to a traditional campus institution, but Granite State College was a perfect match for me because it was not only affordable, but also because it was very conducive to my schedule. I could take evening courses at the Conway campus. Initially, I just took one Spanish class but once I got my foot in the door, I saw that there were so many other students like me who were actually pursuing a degree as an adult. I thought, if they can do it, I can do it.
