Where do you find the best beer in America? Right here in Portsmouth, according to Men's Journal Magazine. In fact, the October issue featured Shoals Pale Ale, produced by Smuttynose Brewing Company, at the top of a list that included selections from all parts of the country.
Two years ago, our Big A IPA was named to their top 25, says Smuttynose president Peter Egelston. It was a great honor, but a little frustrating, too, since that particular beer is only available about six weeks out of the year, and in very limited quantities. We spent the next few weeks responding to inquiries from all over the country, trying to explain why they couldn't get this beer.
That won't be a problem this time as Shoals Pale Ale is offered year round and is widely available. It's our original beer, which makes this recognition even more rewarding, says Egelston.
The ale was described as having plenty in common with its English cousins.
