Index Packaging, Inc. in Milton is celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary serving the packaging needs of businesses across New England. The company manufactures custom wood, foam, and corrugated products.

According to a statement, Index Packaging is a company founded upon innovation. In 1968, William and Constance Lander started the business in the basement of their home in Horseheads, NY with the invention of the Tip (N) Tell shipping indicator. Ten years later, they secured patent rights to Drop (N) Tell.

In 1981, the company moved to its current main campus in Milton, and grew its custom wood, foam, corrugated, and warehousing operations. In addition to the Milton campus, the company holds two warehousing locations in Rochester and Dover. While the company began with a staff of two, it has grown to employ more than 175 people across various manufacturing, production, distribution, engineering, and administrative disciplines. Currently owned by the Lander family, Index Packaging is now operated by President Michael Wiles and his management staff.

“The growth of our company has been amazing over the 24 years I’ve been here,” says President Michael Wiles.  “When I began in March of 1994, we were consolidated into one building with 30 employees.  Today, our Milton campus encompasses six buildings, with two others offsite, and a total workforce of more than 175.  It’s a testament to the original ideas of the founders along with hard-working and dedicated employees.”

With strong roots, Index Packaging turns its focus to the next fifty years. Future plans include the purchase of property at the Granite State Business Park in Rochester and the addition of up to 120,000 square feet in the next few years.
