Class of 2014 Brian Furtado

Published Tuesday Aug 12, 2014

In recent years, there’s been increased concern by state leaders about whether NH can keep its best and brightest. With the help of the NH College and University Council in Concord, Business NH Magazine checked in with colleges and universities around the state to find out what their top students are planning. Here’s what one graduate reported back to us.

Hometown: Weare, NH

Degree Earned: BA in Creative Writing and Comparative Literature with a minor in English

GPA: 4.0

Career Aspirations: To be a professor of English and Creative Writing.

Graduate School: My plan is to begin in the fall of 2015. I plan on taking a year off, however, to save money, pay some of my student loans and take some teaching certification classes. I’m still looking at potential schools, but I have a few solid choices. Oregon State University and Portland State University in Oregon as well as Washington State University in Seattle are my top three choices.

Have you landed a job? I have not landed a job yet.

What are the biggest challenges to finding employment? I’m a non-traditional student. I got my first degree in Business Administration back in 2007, and at that time I was of the traditional age for college graduates. After receiving that first degree I found myself bouncing between unemployment and underemployment for about five years before I determined I had chosen the wrong path for myself. Then I made the decision to go back to school for something I was passionate about. When I enrolled at New England College I had no illusions of finding a job right out of college. I’d already learned that lesson the hard way. I knew this time around I needed a clear plan that would take me through to a Master’s of Fine Arts degree, so that I could get a job teaching.

Why move out of state? I do plan to move out of NH in a year or so because I want to broaden my horizons and diversify my education. I feel that will benefit both me in my future goals and the students I seek to educate.
