Are You Living Paycheck to Paycheck?

Published Wednesday Feb 9, 2011

Need help getting your finances in order and preparing for life's twists and turns? Did you know that more than half of all Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and that more than 1 in 5 of those earn $100K?

In "Living Beyond Paycheck to Paycheck," the first of a series of personal finance seminars with expert and author Michael Rubin, to be held March 9 in Durham, Rubin will explain why traditional budgeting is unnecessary and often unhelpful, and how to save money and become fiscally responsible. "If you're living paycheck to paycheck, it's not because of the income you make, it's because of the decisions you make," Rubin says.

During the seminar, Rubin will highlight four of his "Top 10 Saving Strategies," focusing on the importance of having an emotional connection to your money; enjoying free stuff; majoring on the major, minoring on the minor; and not spending what you don't see.

Rubin will also offer tips on managing debt so it goes away, and discuss why financial balance is important. Attendees will find out why credit cards are dangerous even if you pay the entire balance every month, and why so many people find they can't save even after dramatically lowering their day to day spending-and what can be done to overcome this challenge.

"Learning about money is daunting to many of us," Rubin notes. "This seminar will provide a comfortable forum where people can learn how to plan their financial futures without worrying about someone trying to sell them something." Rubin is the author of Beyond Paycheck to Paycheck: A Conversation About Income, Wealth, and the Steps in Between. His forthcoming book The Savings Solution: How to Live For Today While Saving for Tomorrow will be released this year.
