The Trade Show Commandments

Published Tuesday Mar 27, 2012

1. Thou Shalt Not Eat or Drink in the Exhibit Booth

Nobody will approach someone who has food in his or her mouth.

2. Thou Shalt Not Sit Behind a Table

This places a physical barrier between you and attendees, making you less approachable.

3. Thou Shalt Not Chew Gum

Does anyone look professional smacking gum?

4. Thou Shalt Not Chat Too Much With Other Staff in the Booth

If you're busy talking with your colleagues, potential clients will pass you by.

5. Thou Shalt Not Scowl

Yes, you're tired, hungry and your feet hurt, but don't let it show. No one wants to speak with someone who looks bored, tired or surly. Smile!

6. Thou Shalt Not Be Passive

If you stand there and watch people walk by, that's exactly what they'll do until someone with more initiative grabs their attention and business.

7. Thou Shalt Not Be an Obnoxious Salesperson

You're there to engage people and get leads. The show floor is not the place to try and close the deal. Use this time to make a good first impression. Do the final deal after the show.

8. Thou Shalt Not Be a Slug

Be energized and fresh for booth duty. Partying the night before is not an excuse to merely be present in the booth.
