The Cost for Kids When Mom or Dad Loses a Job

A new report from the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of NH explores how the a parent;s job loss doubles the odds of children losing private health insurance. Among the report's key findings are:

• More than one in four privately insured children had a parent leave employment voluntarily or involuntarily between 2008 and 2012.

• Within 18 months after a parent lost a job, 19 percent of privately insured children lost their private held insurance. 

• Children living in the highest income quintile more often transitioned to no insurance, while children living in the lowest income quintile more often transitioned to public health insurance.
