The City of Rochester’s Economic Development Department received four industry awards in 2013 for its work to attract new business to the region.

“This has been a very good year for Rochester’s economic development, and it is very gratifying to see that the city’s efforts to attract new jobs and expand our tax base stands up well next to other cities of our same size,” said Rochester Mayor T.J. Jean.

Karen Pollard, Rochester’s deputy city manager and director of community development, said the awards recognized the hard work of the staff and strong community partnerships the department has developed over the years. “We have a talented and professional staff, but I also know we would not be able to do half as much as we have done if it were not for strong support from the city’s business community and all of its departments,” said Pollard.

The four awards are:

Expansion Solutions magazine awarded the City of Rochester a 2013 Top 5 Award of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing for its efforts to attract several new advanced manufacturing facilities to the city, including SAFRAN Aerospace/Albany International, Laars Heating Systems and Lydall Performance Materials. The magazine said the city makes “an excellent business case for Rochester, New Hampshire – low cost/high reward!” The magazine cited the city’s coordinated efforts develop and market a package of location services including: the New Hampshire R & D Tax Credit Program; customized workforce training programs through Great Bay Community College, Granite State College and the University of New Hampshire; and coordination with community partners to provide real estate, transportation and financing services.

The Northeastern Economic Developers Association (NEDA) awarded the city the Best in Class Newsletter and Best in Class TV Campaign awards. Both winning promotions were produced under the city’s “ThinkRochester” economic development brand that also includes the www.thinkrochester.biz web site and other promotions.

Finally, the city was bronze medal winner for High Performance Economic Development cities from 25,001 to 100,000 in population category in the High Performance Economic Development Olympics, an annual competition sponsored by Atlas Advertising. City of Rochester (NH) Economic Development Corporation attained this status by announcing the third most jobs created for any organization of its size in 2012-2013. As part of Atlas Advertising’s High Performance Economic Development Benchmarking Survey, the City of Rochester (NH) Economic Development Corporation reported the creation of 1,200 jobs in the Rochester region over the past 12 months. “The economic development organizations we recognized and honored are the best of the best in their category,” said Atlas Advertising CEO Ben Wright. “As such, they are the models for our industry.”
