Portsmouth Firm Develops Safe Drinking Website for Police

Published Wednesday Jun 6, 2012

The Portsmouth-based Atom Group, a web software agency, is designing and developing an interactive website for the Portsmouth Police Department (PPD), spotlighting the dangers of drinking and driving and providing options for safe rides home. The website launches a  Think Smart. Drink Safe. campaign (www.thinksmartdrinksafe.org), part of their Responsible Drinking initiative.

The microsite is designed to be a place where people can find facts about drinking responsibly. It will also provide options and advice to people that have been drinking, giving them appropriate information and options to get home safely.

"The Think Smart. Drink Safe site offers interactive features, such as a blood alcohol calculator, where web visitors input their height, weight, age and number of drinks consumed to get an approximation of their blood alcohol level. The hope is that once people use this tool and realize how impaired they really are, they'll opt to find a safer way home, rather than driving while intoxicated," said Captain Frank Warchol of the Portsmouth Police Department. "Telephone numbers for cab companiesand other safe travel optionsare also conveniently located on our site."

"Drinking and driving continues to be a problem in our community," Warchol added. "We hope that people will use this site to learn more about responsible drinking, remember the dangers of drinking and driving, and find viable solutions to get home safely."

"We are honored to be part of such a worthwhile project that will literally be saving lives in our community," said Adam Vicinus, managing partner of The Atom Group. "This new site will allow the Portsmouth Police Department to effectively connect with their target audiences about responsible drinking. People can even access this site from their mobile devices, giving them easy access to critical information when they need it the most."

The Portsmouth Police Department's Responsible Drinking initiative is both proactive and community-oriented. Other efforts include alcohol compliance checks, educational opportunities, partnerships with local schools, and an alcohol tip line.
