Pork Butt, Traditions and BNH

For my family, it’s just not the holidays unless there’s pork-butt stuffing on the table. And really, could a dish sound more appetizing than by having butt as part of its name? Think the name’s off-putting? It looks awful too. It’s grey-brown. But that mixture of ground pork, mashed potatoes, bread crumbs and seasonings is sooo good. Well, if you’re a blood relative that is. Everyone born into my mom’s side of the family is addicted to it. It’s our crack. We’ll sneak bites of it from the fridge the night before Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve. But for anyone who marries into the family—forget about it. (See above description as to why.)

This time of year brings up feelings of nostalgia and the excitement for family traditions. Not only do they nourish our souls, they can be a great way to interject some energy into a conversation. Petering out on the small talk at a networking event? Just ask someone about his or her family traditions at the holidays, and they will light up.

I’m also looking forward to my workplace traditions. Yes, the BNH Festivus Parties are epic, but that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s our tradition of shaking things up. As we plan for 2015, I am giddy with antici…pation. Next month, we’ll present our 30th anniversary issue, celebrating our past, the people and trends that have shaped our business community and taking a peak into the future. We’ll look at how several business sectors have changed and unveil five more leaders we think will shape the state. Those are just a few of the things you’ll find in this Back to the Future special edition. The 30th anniversary issue also means bumping the unveiling of the winners of our Best Companies to Work For in 2014 to our January issue, where we’ll also announce major changes to this popular competition moving forward.

And, in 2015, the magazine will be moving forward. We have an ambitious agenda, with new twists on perennial favorites, more investigative business journalism, the launch of new events and the addition of features you won’t see anywhere else in NH. One new item in our Biz Bits section in January is a project headed by Associate Editor Erika Cohen where she’ll interview CEOs on the run. An avid runner and accomplished triathlete, Erika knows running can break down barriers between people. It will be a fun and informative new spin on the traditional interview. Want to go for a run with Erika? Drop her a line at ecohen@BusinessNHMagazine.com.

In the spirit of the holidays, we thank our readers and advertisers for their support in 2014, and we look forward to wowing you in 2015!

Sincerely,

Matthew J. Mowry
