The Lonza Biologics facility in Portsmouth, which has more than 700 employees and is the fifth largest employer in the city, has recently surpassed the one million hour mark without a lost-time injury, according to Mike Cicio, site manager. This is great news, since it means that no one on our site has had a serious injury causing them to miss work or disrupt their personal time. It is important that we all come to work and leave everyday safely and uninjured, he said.
Eric Snyder, head of environmental, health and safety for Lonza Biologics' New England operations, attributes this safety milestone to several key factors:
- Safety Matters For several years now, Lonza Portsmouth employees have participated in monthly Safety Matters sessions. These meetings get employees together to present safety information that can be used at work and at home and encourage employee discussion. Employees often comment on how safety is becoming a regular part of what they do at home as at work, Snyder said.
- Employee Participation In 2012 Lonza implemented a safety points program. Employees are rewarded for participation in safety programs such as safety teams, near-miss reporting, safety inspections, safety bulletin boards, and engagement in the site's Safety Fair.
- Vision of Zero Employees benefit from participation and engagement with safety programs on site. All of these programs and related training are aimed at achieving the Vision of ZERO zero injuries, zero manufacturing process incidents, zero distribution incidents and zero environmental incidents.
Lonza's Biologics facility in Portsmouth, New Hampshire produces specialized antibodies and proteins for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
