NH Women Fight Off Killer

Published Friday Nov 2, 2012

I see these commercials on TV with a 50 year old man dramatically saying, I couldn't believe it, I was only 50 years old and I had a heart attack.' And I laugh to myself thinking, I've got that guy beat by 18 years, said 36-year-old Abbe Hardiman, records and information management specialist at Lonza Biologics in Portsmouth and 2012 Go Red For Women survivor speaker. Hardiman will share her life-changing story at this year's Go Red For Women event Thursday November 8th, 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The other program highlight will be the reveal of the nine BetterU heart makeover challengers sponsored locally by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England and delivered through the Executive Health and Sports Center's 90 Day Commit To Get Fit Program. These nine women, chosen by an application process, have been on a 12-week heart-healthy makeover where they have marked some measurable changes. By week six, Heather Bishop of WZID and a BetterU participant, says, I am feeling great! Clothes I haven't worn in forever are fitting, and I am getting tons of compliments. It's hard work, but I can SEE the results! My resting heart rates and blood pressure are down, so I know I am getting healthier!

The other BetterU Participants include: Vickie Felix (Derry); Susan Tenney (Nashua); Karon Devoid (Concord); Paula McDonough (Portsmouth); Jackie Madison (Hudson); Tracie Joy (Londonderry); Pam Bartlett (Loudon); and Sherry Paradise (Pembroke).

The Radisson Hotel in Manchester will set the stage once again as an expected 400 women gather to attend education sessions, network and join the fight against their number one killer, heart disease.

Leading this event, in what has traditionally been held by a business woman, is the first ever male chair, Alex Walker, general council at Catholic Medical Center. Events like the Go Red For Women Luncheon help support the American Heart Association's public and professional education programs, awareness, advocacy and research. Catholic Medical Center is proud to align itself with such a worthy cause, said Walker.
