NH Lottery Turns 50

The Granite State was the first in the country to catch lotto fever, establishing the country’s first legal lottery on April 30, 1964. Unlike today’s computerized methods, winners of the first lottery games were selected from a large drum with cash prizes topping out at $100,000.

Stores selling lottery tickets: 1,250+

Powerball sales in 2013: $46.2 million

Biggest ticket payout: August 2003 North Conway $70 million cash

Number of instant tickets sold between FY 1975 (first year of sales) and 2013: 1.5 billion

Revenue in 2013: Nearly $280 million
