New Museum Celebrates the White Mountains

Published Friday Mar 29, 2013

Plymouth is the gateway to the White Mountains, so it is fitting that it is now also the home to Plymouth State University's Museum of the White Mountains. The museum, housed in a former church, will feature artwork, photos and collectibles that illustrate the cultural and geographic history of the region.

The collection includes images and items from the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch, which is closed for renovations; and a collection of first-edition guidebooks, books about the region, historic postcards, plate-glass photographs, and images and hotel ledgers from White Mountains properties and places.

The first exhibit at the museum, which opened its doors in February, is Passing Through: The Allure of the White Mountains.  It features images, films and interpretive panels that explore how societal concepts of time and space affected the development of the area, including how the evolution from horseback to automobiles changed people's experience in the region and their connection to nature.

The museum also features many online exhibits, including one on the Weeks Act of 1911, which protected the forest from development, and another on the history of the Brown Company Paper Mill in Berlin.
