Granite Tax Connect Makes Paying Taxes Easier

While no one looks forward to paying taxes, turning over the money to the state is now a whole lot easier. The NH Department of Revenue Administration (DRA) has officially launched its Revenue Information Management System (RIMS) and Granite Tax Connect (GTC).

The launch has been in the making for nearly four years, says DRA Commissioner Lindsey Stepp. It is the largest technology upgrade since the previous system was launched nearly 30 years ago. During the first month, there were more than 1,000 enrollments and the number is steadily increasing.

The first phase of the rollout allows the roughly 9,000 taxpayers who owe meals and rentals, Medicaid enhancement or nursing facility quality assessment taxes to complete many tasks online, such as filing electronically, scheduling payments, viewing correspondence and checking the status of returns, payments, and credit requests.

Barbara and Joe Prendergast, who purchased Jugtown Country Store in Waterville Valley in September, were unfamiliar with the process. “I had Joe hold my hand in October’s filing with Granite Tax Connect but was able to [navigate] the system very easily and filed for November in less than two minutes,” she says.

Prendergast says it’s much easier than filling out paperwork and allows her to file on the first of the month and choose the date for the payment to occur. “I don’t have to think about it again.”

Phase two, the largest part of the rollout, is expected to launch in the fall of 2020 and will include the business enterprise tax, business profits tax, communications services tax and interest and dividends tax, affecting approximately 139,000 taxpayers. The third phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2021 and will include all remaining tax types.
