UNH Innovation and UNH InterOperability Lab Facility, Durham

UNHI manages and commercializes UNH innovations and supports efforts to build industry partnerships. The UNH-IOL is a neutral third-party testing lab for global networking and data communications products. The space for the two entities, completed in 2015, is 37,000 square feet on the ground floor of Madbury Commons. The space is designed as an open floor plan with collaborative workspaces throughout. The space is outfitted with modern architectural details like large X-bracing, exposed industrial-style ceilings, bold pops of color and several skylight columns to provide natural light. The hallways are lined with a gallery of large black and white photos of images taken by Lotte Jacobi, a famous Jewish photographer who bequeathed her huge collection of negatives to UNH. The UNHI wing also includes an interactive classroom, shared with the UNH-IOL, that is used for training and events and is furnished with collaborative-style seating, a large screen TV and wall-to-ceiling marker boards. A large portion of the wing is dedicated to co-working space and rentable offices to provide a collaborative workplace for entrepreneurs. It is also home to the student-run Makerspace, a workshop outfitted with fabrication tools and equipment that includes 3D printers and a laser cutter.
