At Bangor Savings Bank, supporting the overall financial wellbeing of employees is more than expected—it’s essential. The bank offers a range of interest-free employee loans to ease financial strain and promote healthier lifestyles. These include loans for energy-efficient home upgrades and pre-payment of winter heating fuel, PCs and mobile devices, exercise equipment, and out-of-pocket medical expenses that might otherwise cause financial strain. For those pursuing higher education, Bangor Savings Bank provides a tuition plan covering up to four undergraduate or two graduate-level courses.

Volunteerism is a cornerstone of the bank’s culture. In FY 2025, employees dedicated over 8,000 volunteer hours to more than 530 organizations across the region. Every employee is eligible to have paid volunteer time off to support causes that matter personally.

Holistic health is supported through the bank’s B Well Program, which features individual and team fitness challenges, health coaching, on-site clinics, and relaxation chair massages. Employees and their dependents enrolled in the bank’s medical plans also have access to free programs for hypertension, musculoskeletal health, diabetes, and obesity. These programs include smart health devices such as connected scales, blood glucose monitors, and musculoskeletal kits alongside support from health coaches, behavioral health specialists, and hypertension experts.

The bank fully covers short- and long-term disability insurance, dental insurance, and pays over 98% of health insurance premiums. It contributes between $450 and $900 to health savings accounts and provides 26 to 36 days of paid time off annually, 11 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of paid parental leave.

Leadership development is also a priority. For example, the BSB Leader 2.0 program is a nine-month program designed to cultivate authentic leadership by helping employees explore their personal values and beliefs—and understand why they matter to others.

Seven companies were inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.)

For 27 years, Business NH Magazine has recognized businesses that go out of their way to create engaging workplaces and understand that fulfilled employees are more productive.

A recent report from Gallup found employee engagement globally dropped in 2024—only the second time in the past 12 years. Engagement among managers took a big hit as they face new daunting challenges.

When your managers aren’t happy, your workforce isn’t too far behind. Finding ways to engage employees and developing cultures that meet these new challenges is imperative. Who better to turn to for answers than those with employees reporting high engagement? The September issue of Business NH Magazine celebrates delves into and celebrates the practices of this year’s Best Companies to Work For in New Hampshire,” says Executive Editor Matt Mowry.
