The effects of high inflation and economic uncertainty were evident on this year’s list of the Top 100 Private Companies in NH. This year, only 64% of the Private 100 grew revenue between 2022 and 2024 (down from 71% on last year’s list and 90% on the 2023 list) and 30% saw three-year average annual growth of 10% or more (down from 43% last year and from 59% in 2023).
Collectively the Private 100 posted revenue in excess of $45 billion in 2024, nearly a 2% decrease from 2022. And many sectors remain strong. Each year, Business NH Magazine highlights the 20 fastest growing companies on the list and this year they are dominated by construction companies, which make up 45% of the 20 fastest growing businesses. Rounding out the 20 fastest list is business services (15%); manufacturing, retail/wholesale and financial services/insurance (10% each); and education and real estate (5% each).
The List by the Numbers
Here’s a statistical look at the class of 2025:
- These 100 companies provide 5,170 part-time jobs and 33,552 full-time jobs, of which more than 12,100 are in NH.
- The list is dominated by four sectors: Business services (23%), manufacturing (23%), retail/wholesale (21%), and construction/trades (18%). Other sectors are financial services/insurance, hospitality and real estate (4% each), as well as agriculture, education, and support services (1% each).
- 21% are women-led businesses.
- Monadnock Paper Mills in Bennington is the oldest firm on the list at 205 years old while Advanced Exteriors and Glazing of New England, a Salem-based Exterior building envelope provider, is the newest at just four years old and is the third-fastest growing company on the list.
- The majority of listees—67%—are family owned.
- 13% of the companies are new to the list or are returning after dropping off last year.
Making the List
So how do businesses get on the list? An annual survey on our website must be completed. Businesses are then ranked by 2024 gross revenue and average annual growth between 2022 and 2024.
The five fastest growing companies on the list are profiled (see page 49), as well as Five Companies to Watch (page 62), which are those firms that do not generate enough revenue to make the Private 100 list, but generated at least $1 million in revenue in 2024 and have experienced rapid growth over the past three years.
