Families love each other, fight with one another, some forgive, and others nurse a grudge like it was another family member. And yet, some do all that and still go into business with one another. Family businesses are the backbone of the NH economy ranging from literal mom and pop shops to retail behemoth Walmart. To highlight this critical sector of the economy, Business NH Magazine compiles an annual list of the Top Family-Owned Businesses in NH. Family businesses from across the state, with annual revenue of $1 million or more, are invited to complete the survey.
Of the 114 businesses on this year’s list, 74% grew revenue between 2023 and 2025, with 34% experiencing average annual growth of 10% or more. Of the 20 fastest growing companies on the list, half are in the construction and the trades and a quarter are in business services. The other sectors represented among the 20 fastest growing companies are retail/wholesale, manufacturing, and education.
Collectively, the 113 companies on the Top Family-owned Businesses list generated $37.8 billion in revenue in 2024 and employ more than 24,600 full-time workers (more than 6,800 in NH) and over 1,800 part-timers or seasonal workers.
These are companies with longevity. The average number of years the companies on the list have been family-owned is 44 and 9% have been family-owned for more than 100 years.
