Portsmouth Housing Authority Envisions 4-Story Development at Old Sherburne School

PORTSMOUTH — The former Sherburne School property is an “attractive site” for the development of desperately needed below-market-rate housing in the city, according to a report released by the Portsmouth Housing Authority.

The site at 35 Sherburne Road, which has most recently been home to Lister Academy, “meets key criteria” needed for the development of permanently affordable housing, the PHA says in the report, including meeting the need for economy of scale at the site.

“With all new developments, Portsmouth Housing seeks to identify sites that will accommodate 40 or more units of housing. This scale of development is responsive to the extraordinary housing need, and offers economies of scale in development and operation, thereby enabling Portsmouth Housing to develop, own and manage to the highest possible standard,” the report states. “Based upon our initial site review, the 5 acres of land at Sherburne School offers a potential opportunity to develop greater than 40 units of affordable housing, and therefore is an attractive candidate.”
