JSA to Lead Gafney Home Redesign

JSA, an architecture and design firm in Portmouth, has been selected by Community Action Partnership of Strafford Country to restore the historic Gafney Home in Rochester.

The historic landmark has served the community for 115 years, many of those dedicated to the elderly as a small 20-bed assisted living facility.

The character of the grand mansion is being preserved while incorporating modern functions including additional improvements like an elevator. The outcome of the project will provide apartments to those age 62 years and older who have demonstrated financial need, much in keeping with the original mission that Judge Charles Gafney intended when he donated the home in 1904.

Construction is tentatively set for Spring 2021 and is contingent upon planning approval and securing competitive Low Income Housing Tax Credit funds.

“We’re eager to provide the design services restoring the home back to the community in a manner that would receive Judge Gafney’s approval,” says Sandra Hodge IIDA, Principal, Interior Design. “This magnificent mansion was a cornerstone in Rochester, well respected in senior living and historic architecture alike, and we’re proud to bring our unique and experienced skillset to this project.”
