Easy Aquariums in Portsmouth is not your average pet store. What makes the company unique is a passion for all things aquatic and a science-based approach to everything they sell. The company offers a range of products and services, from freshwater and saltwater fish and corals to reptiles and amphibians.
Larisa Larrabee, general manager for Easy Aquarium’s stores in Portsmouth and Westbrook, Maine, says she grew up with parents who bred tropical fish and that the company’s employees all have a deep understanding of aquatic life. “We have customers coming in and people working with us who have a solid understanding of reptiles and aquatic life, and we source all of our animals through reputable vendors,” she says.
Nate Metayer, manager of Easy Aquariums in Portsmouth, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aquaculture and Aquarium Science from the University of New England (UNE) in Biddeford, Maine, in 2021.
Metayer’s leap into the world of aquatic life, and eventually aquaculture and aquarium science, began when his parents helped him set up his first 20-gallon fish tank when he was 7 years old. In college, Metayer served as president of the aquarium club and worked at UNE’s Clown Fish lab where he had the opportunity to experiment with various medications that treat human and animal diseases. What sets Easy Aquariums apart from other pet stores selling fish, he says, is not only the company’s knowledgeable staff but also its strict quarantine process.
All of Easy Aquarium’s freshwater and saltwater fish undergo weeks of observational and medicated quarantine, where Metayer and other staff provide appropriate care, food, and medications to promote healthy growth and to eliminate any parasites and illnesses before the animals reach the sales floor.
Metayer says he’s seen a shift in people’s concern for understanding and caring for their aquatic life. “A lot of people today are more ethically concerned and want to be educated about ecosystems and that’s amazing,” Metayer says, adding that Easy Aquariums will help people with their tank setup and maintenance, water testing and analysis, custom aquarium design as well as animal care and feeding advice.
