I work for a large manufacturer in southern NH and we used to be treated to lavish employee appreciation parties. Our bosses would cook burgers on the grill and the top brass would host games where we could win gift certificates and fun prizes. But when the [recession] hit in 2008, a lot of the caring about employees seemed to go out the window. In 2009, our employee appreciation day became a pizza party, which was still nice. Instead of being an entire afternoon, it was reduced to two hours, but most of us understood the economy was bad. The bosses still handed out a few small items and told us how much we were appreciated.

In 2010, they stacked pizzas in boxes in the cafeteria and we were informed by email to enjoy our appreciation day during our lunch break, but not to take any extra time. By the time my group had lunch, the pizza was cold. Hooray. Last year, we were sent an email that appreciation day would be potluck and we should sign up to let everyone know what we'd bring. Oh, and not only did I have to cook my own meal, but the potluck was to be held in the cafeteria during our lunch break only. I passed. Well you've probably guessed where this is going. This year, the company announced that they were discontinuing employee appreciation day, but we should feel free to celebrate on our own. Priceless.
