Change at Helm at Citizen Bank NH

Published Friday Apr 15, 2011

Citizens Financial Group, Inc. today announced that Joseph Carelli, executive vice president, commercial banking, was appointed president of Citizens Bank, New Hampshire and Vermont. Carelli, 52, will assume the role in June and succeed Cathy Schmidt, who has served as state president for five years. Carelli is based in Manchester.

In addition to his responsibilities as state president in NH and Vermont, Carelli will retain his commercial banking management responsibilities within New England. He joined Citizens Bank in 1992 holding management positions in credit administration and commercial banking until becoming commercial banking director in 2004.

Prior to joining Citizens, Carelli spent several years working for Hartford National Bancorp and New Heritage Bank in various commercial lending and management roles. Carelli is a 1980 graduate of the University of Massachusetts.

"I am honored to have this opportunity and look forward to working with my colleagues to build on Citizens' success and our ambitious objectives of delivering the highest quality of service to our customers, colleagues and community," said Carelli.

A long-time resident of New Hampshire, Carelli is actively engaged in the community and serves on the boards of the New Hampshire Bankers Association, the Nashua Center for the Multiply Handicapped and The World Schools.

Schmidt, who is leaving but who hasn't said where she'll land, joined CFG in 2002 and served as executive VP and retail banking director in Massachusetts prior to being named state president in 2006. In a separate e-mail from the bank's e-mailed announcement, Schmidt wrote, "Just so you know I'm planning to stay in New Hampshire. I will continue to serve in the community with my current role as chair of the Granite United Way and co-chair of the NH Food Bank Community Campaign. So, you will see me around town."
