When talking to employees at NFI, it does not take long to feel the passion they have for their work. This is an organization that attracts people who want to care for others. NFI also knows caring for others can take a toll and has created a culture of caring for its employees as well.

Employees have the option to receive counseling services at no cost. Employees receive three weeks of vacation time in their first year with increases up to six weeks as well as 11 paid holidays per year. Employees can carry over their sick time and accrue up to six months of sick time. All employees, except for teaching staff, can choose a four-day workweek.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, NFI North gave all employees a permanent $4 per hour increase, and in light of the turbulent economy recently gave all employees a $1 per hour raise. In addition, every employee received a retention bonus this year—$4,000 for all direct care staff and $3,000 for the management team.  NFI also offers $4,000 to $6,000 sign-on bonuses for new hires.

NFI North also invests in developing employees and their skills. More than 60% of NFI's leadership team have been promoted into their leadership roles. When NFI noticed that there was a higher level of turnover between year two and year three of employment, it increased the frequency of its six-month leadership training program, allowing newer employees to become part of the vision for the organization's future. Through the program, employees attend 12 training sessions designed to help them advance their leadership, managerial and supervisory skills. Additionally, NFI offers $2,500 in annual tuition reimbursement.
