SpotOn Fence released its inaugural GPS dog fence technology in 2019 and racked up awards from the NH Tech Alliance, the Consumer Electronics Show and South by Southwest.
Then customers started complaining. The screen on the dog’s collar was hard to read, the collar didn’t stand up to the wear and tear of a typical canine, and setting up a virtual boundary was not intuitive. “Last year was a bit of a challenge,” says President Jennifer Joyce.
So, the company regrouped. “In 2021 we went back to the drawing board and redesigned,” Joyce says, eventually releasing the second generation of its collar last April. Technology was moved to the app so people could use their phones and mobile devices to set virtual boundaries for their dogs. And setting up perimeters became much more intuitive.
“[Now] when customers first log into the app, it walks you through step by step setting up your first fence,” says Joyce, adding customer service calls have dropped off. “Sales and reviews are great. It’s a completely different product that is much easier to use.”
And, in addition to winning new customers, SpotOn moved its assembly operations from upstate New York to Manchester. Joyce projects 30% to 40% sales growth this year and that sales will double again in 2023.
The company is also developing two new electronic products for the containment market that should take 18 to 24 months to complete and will likely launch in 2024. However, Joyce says they can’t disclose any details other than to say they are products that do not currently exist in the marketplace.
“Our brand recognition is growing,” she says. “The future is to continue to invent consumer electronic products that can help dogs run free off leash.”
