It only makes sense that an energy distribution company wants to have “engaged, energized employees.” And it has created a culture that seems to be doing just that—the average tenure of a Unitil employee is just over 12 years and turnover last year was 4%.
Unitil invests in developing its employees. Unitil University creates courses where gas and electric operations employees share how they approach their jobs safely and plant accountants teach employees how tracking time impacts the company’s rate. Unitil also has third-party partners presenting information on leadership, conflict resolution, and other key skills.
Unitil partnered with Sojourn Partners in Bedford to start two new 10-month leadership development programs. Unitil also began a formal mentorship program with a matching process that includes a formal application, and pairings vetted by a committee. Unitil also offers annual tuition reimbursement of $10,000 to those working on a degree or certification.
Unitil offers employees a host of perks, including an interest-free personal computer loan, onsite concierge dry-cleaning service, a $250 stipend for remote employees to enhance their workspace at home, and a 4% contribution to each employee’s 401(k) upon being hired regardless if they contribute themselves. Unitil also matches up to 6% of the employee’s contribution.
Unitil offers employees a variety of discount programs through Tickets At Work, LifeMart and Smart Shopper, allowing them to access discounts on daycare, car rentals, travel, hotels, tickets, theme parks, and even discounts and cash payouts for medical procedures.
And when Unitil reveals to employees that the company won the Best Companies to Work for competition, the director of HR dresses up in a donut costume and delivers donuts to every employee. Get ready for donuts!
