There are only a handful of NH companies and nonprofits that generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue and this year, five of them are led by women: Dartmouth Health, Dartmouth College, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Planet Fitness, and Southern
NH University.
This year’s list of the Top Women-Led Business in NH is Business NH Magazine’s largest yet, with 92 companies on the list. These companies generated more than $4.4 billion in revenue in 2023 and 70% grew revenue between 2021 and 2023. Collectively, revenue generated by the Top Women-Led Companies increased by 12% in that time frame.
The top women-led businesses employ 4,225 full-time workers in NH and more than 2,500 part-time or temporary workers. More than half (56%) are family owned. Of the executives on the list, 49% founded their companies and 75% have controlling ownership.
The dominant sector on the list is business services (30%), with law (6%) and staffing (4%) being major subsets of that. Other major sectors are: retail/wholesale (16%), construction/trades/engineering (12%), manufacturing (10%), hospitality (8%), financial services (6.5%), healthcare/fitness/home services (6.5%), real estate and settlement services (6%), and education (5%).
To make the list, businesses must generate at least $1 million annually. Most of the companies on the list—59%—generate less than $10 million in annual revenue and 46% generate less than $5 million. On the other end of the scale, 8% generate more than $100 million annually while 11% generate revenue of more than $50 million.
Business NH Magazine also highlights the 50 largest women-led nonprofits in the state by revenue. The Top 50 Nonprofits in NH posted annual revenue of $7.7 billion, although $4.9 billion of that is attributable to the top three nonprofits. The 50 nonprofits employ more than 54,800 people and have more than 17,000 volunteers. Of the top women-led nonprofits, 44% provide healthcare services, 30% are social service agencies and 14% are in the education sector.
What all these companies demonstrate are the significant economic and social impact women-led organizations have in NH. If you think your business or organization should be on the lists, contact Editor Matthew J. Mowry at mmowry@GraniteMediaGroup.com.
