The buy versus rent debate is genereally one relating to houses, but a new rule under consideration by the FCC would expand it to cable set-top boxes. A U.S. Senate study found that consumers pay $231 a year on average to rent a cable box. Collectively, the cable industry pulls in around $20 billion annually in set top box rental fees.
