Stress, Vacations and the Office

Published Friday Aug 25, 2017

As we head into the dog days of summer, many are planning a last hurrah vacation or weekend getaway while the sun still shines. For others, it’s just a pipe dream as they feel shackled to the office.
And it is all taking a toll on workers.

A survey released by staffing firm Accountemps earlier this year shows:

• 52 percent of workers feel stressed at work on a day-to-day basis, and
• 60 percent report work-related pressure has increased in the last five years.

So blowing off some steam and going on vacation is just what the doctor ordered, right? Except many workers aren’t disconnecting from work while they are on vacation. A more recent survey by Accountemps finds:

• 54 percent of professionals check in at least once or twice a week with the office while on vacation; that’s up considerably from 41 percent in 2016.

Other findings include:
• 37 percent of workers feel they don’t have enough vacation time.
• U.S. workers planned to take an average of 10 vacation days this summer.
