Snorers Head to the Dentist

Months of working from home may be too much togetherness for some couples as those endearing quirks are becoming grounds for divorce. Snoring could be the straw that breaks that camel’s back.

However, a handful of dental offices are offering a five-minute procedure that could bring relief.

Wellspring Dental Group in Bedford is among those offering Solea Sleep, a new laser therapy that provides rapid relief for snoring, says Dr. David Chan of Wellspring Dental Group.

Chan says he sees many couples coming in. “It is usually one person saying, ‘this person snores really bad’ and the other person is denying it,” he says.

Studies show that roughly 67% of adults snore, primarily caused by vibration that occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in the soft palate. Chan says Solea Sleep uses ultra-low laser energy to tighten and stiffen collagen in the soft palate, reducing vibrations. During a consultation, the doctor will examine structures and ask about lifestyle.

“The total treatment takes only about 3 to 4 minutes, plus prep time of 10 to 15 minutes and has very little downtime,” says Chan. He says most patients notice a difference right away. The tightening lasts about 12 to
18 months.
