PORTSMOUTH — A city committee voted to explore whether Portsmouth should launch a “car-sharing operation” in the popular tourist community.
The city’s Parking Traffic and Safety Committee voted unanimously Thursday morning to “request staff to report back on alternatives, feasibility and opportunities for a car-sharing program in the city,” such as Zipcar.
City Councilor Andrew Bagley, the committee chair, acknowledged when Zagster launched a bike-sharing service with the city several years ago, “it wasn’t really a success.”
“But what the thought was is there’s a number of people who live downtown that maybe have two cars or one car, and if residents had access to a car they could use for trips outside of the downtown corridor, or for places they couldn’t walk relatively easily, they may be incentivized to not have that second car or a car at all,” Bagley said.
