Oracle to Acquire Dyn

Published Monday Nov 21, 2016

Oracle signed an agreement to acquire Dyn,a cloud-based internet performance and domain name systems (DNS) provider, based in Manchester, that monitors, controls, and optimizes Internet applications and cloud services. And there are indications that Oracle plans to keep Dyn, which has roughly 350 employees at the headquarters in Manchester.

"This an exciting day for both Dyn and New Hampshire. The combination of Dyn and Oracle creates the most comprehensive cloud computing platform in the world, which means people in New Hampshire will have an impact on the internet for years to come," says Kyle York, Dyn's chief strategy officer. "While we cannot discuss details of the deal, there is a commitment to keep the Manchester office open, running and growing. We also plan to continue supporting our local community, which has been so good to Dyn over the years."

There was no indication of a price given.

The news comes after Dyn made headlines last month when it was the target of of a Denial of Service attack that shut down traffic to major web sites, including Netflix and Spotify. Within hours, Dyn was able to bring sites back online from the unprecedented attack. (Click here for a story from Wired that delves into why Oracle would want to buy Dyn even after that public challenge.)

“Oracle already offers enterprise-class IaaS and PaaS for companies building and running Internet applications and cloud services,” says Thomas Kurian, president of product development at Oracle. “Dyn’s immensely scalable and global DNS is a critical core component and a natural extension to our cloud computing platform.”

Dyn’s global network drives 40 billion traffic optimization decisions daily for more than 3,500 enterprise customers, including Twitter, Pfizer and CNBC. The deal extends the Oracle cloud computing platform and provides enterprise customers with a one-stop shop for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Dyn is one of the fastest growing companies in NH, as well as one of the fastest growing tech companies in America, according to Deloitte, with more than 27 successive quarters of growth dating back to 2009.

Dyn was named the 2016 Business of the Year in the manufacturing/technology category  by Business NH Magazine and the NH Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives and achieved Hall of Fame Status in the Best Companies to Work For competition presented by Business NH Magazine and NH Businesses for Social Responsibility in September.

Dyn has been active in the community as well. Dyn employees last year raised $14,000 for NH’s Penguin Plunge to benefit Special Olympics. Dyn has created DynCares, which is the philanthropic arm of the company, which in 2015 donated time and money to FIRST Robotics, City Year, Stay Work Play and the Manchester Young Professionals Network.
