What essentially started as a private construction firm formed to handle the personal projects of its principals in 2006 has grown into a thriving commercial enterprise that takes on projects ranging from new construction to renovations.

When the principals of the firm sold its main business, a power transmission construction firm, in 2010, they decided to focus on growing North & South into a viable business. Many of the employees are also owners (14 to be exact). Anyone running a job for us is an owner, says Peter Johnson, one of those owners.

North & South began to aggressively reach out to other construction companies for subcontract work. General Manager Andrew Tobin says the company focused on its strength as framers. With each job bid, the framing jobs grew bigger, he says.

North & South primarily accepts work within a 100-mile radius of its Dover headquarters. We've been landing contracts with large contractors on big, high-profile projects, Co-owner Ed Conroy says. The company is working on a 20,000-square-foot addition in Alton for Camp Brookwoods, and a 7,700-square-foot renovation of a church into office space in Dover. It is a subcontractor on the construction of the new Paul School of Business and Economics at the University of NH in Durham.

North & South is shifting to general contracting and anticipates hiring a dozen more employees during the next year. Johnson says the company expects to double revenue in 2012. Every month we look at new horizons within our reach, Conroy says.
