Last year brought significant activity in the tech community in NH, from Oracle buying Dyn to the Department of Defense investing $80 million over five years to establish a bio research and manufacturing institute in Manchester. The latter was led by a coalition that includes DEKA Research & Development Corporation, the University of NH and Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
DEKA, owned by famed inventor Dean Kamen, told NPR's Science Friday program last summer, “I think that the intersection of engineering, biology, and medicine allows things to be done that, 10 years ago, would have been considered science fiction.”
Well, reality indeed is stranger than fiction, and NH's tech scene's bustle moved it up two spots on Bloomberg Businesses list of the top innovative states. The Granite State is now ranked 10th nationally. Rankings are based on research and development activity, tech company density, patent activity, percent of the adult population with a science degree and the concentration of STEM workers. New Hampshire placed 2nd for tech company density, 6th for patent activity and 9th for percent of graduates with STEM degrees.
The Granite State came in behind Massachusetts, which ranked 1st and Connecticut, which was 7th but ahead of Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont. Read more about it here.
