NH Adds Diversity, as 3 Counties Lose Population

According to a report by Holly Ramer at the Associated Press, New Hampshire’s northernmost county is no longer alone in losing population, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released last week that show populations also shrunk in two other counties over the last decade.

In sharing the news, Will Arvelo, director at the Division of Economic Development, Business and Economic Affairs writes that "progress is slow, but here is some data to lift our spirits. People of color now make up 12% of the NH population. To those of you who have been longtime residents, this may seem astonishing. Think back to 2010 when the percent was more like 6%. Yeah, we are not breaking any records anytime soon, but we are beginning to reflect the undeniable change in the rest of our nation."

California, Texas, New Mexico and Hawaii are majority people of color. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York are states where people of color make up over 40% of their populations (Center for American Progress | Demographic Growth of People of Color).
