Nationwide Planned Layoffs Fell to 13-month Low in June

Planned layoffs fell to a 13-month low in June, as U.S.-based employers announced job cuts totaling 37,551 during June. That is down 39 percent from the 61,887 announced job cuts in May.

At the midway point of 2012, job cuts total 283,091, an increase of 15 percent from a 2011 six-month total of 245,806.  Global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. in Chicago will release its report on July job cuts on Thursday, August 2, at 7:30 a.m. EDT.

In other employment news, the number of chief executive officer departures reached 99 in June is unchanged from May's total and falling 12 percent from the 113 CEO changes recorded in June of 2011. For the three-month period ending June 30, a total of 288 CEO departures were announced, a 10 percent decrease from the 321 departures announced in the first quarter.

Challenger's report on CEO turnover in July will be released Wednesday, August 8 at 10 a.m. EDT.
