A company that helps to keep the Navy’s ships, well... ship-shape, from blasting and painting exteriors to welding interiors, is growing in Dover.

Peter Lignos, the third generation of his family to work in the industry, has been in the industrial and marine coatings market for 25 years, though AMP United was launched by Lignos with Tom Dinges in 2016. And though corporate offices are in NH, employees are spread across the country at Naval shipyards, including California, Hawaii, Virginia, and Washington.

The US. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard are the company’s chief customers, though the firm also services surface ships for defense contractors like BAE Systems and Newport Ship Building.

AMP United provides preservation services, including blasting and painting. But, to spur growth, the company has been bringing work in that it used to outsource. They also started a scaffolding division, and they provide welding services.

Lignos says businesses in this field are relatively few, and there is plenty of work to go around as the Navy has around 500 ships in service. “They get deployed and come back and do periodic maintenance, and every five to seven years, they do dry docking,” where they are overhauled and modernized, he says.

AMP United has 100 open positions and is actively recruiting. And it has been feeling the pinch of supply chain disruptions, which has made getting paint and raw materials more difficult.

Despite those challenges the company continues to grow. It most recently opened an office in Bremerton, Washington and won submarine contracts in Virginia and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. “We will see significant growth for the foreseeable future. 2021 looks very promising as does 2022 and 2023,” Lignos says.
