Housing and Office Plan Unveiled for Former WHEB Site in Portsmouth

The former home of the WHEB radio station — a landmark off Route 1 in Portsmouth since its construction in the early 1960s — is being targeted for a major redevelopment.

The new owner of the property at 815 Lafayette Road, Prospect North 815 LLC, is proposing to raze the existing buildings and replace them with a major mixed-use development, featuring a total of 72 residential units, according to documents filed with the city.

“The proposed project consists of the demolition of the existing building and tower along Sagamore Creek and the construction of three four-story, 24-unit multi-family buildings (72 total units) with first floor parking and a 2-story, 15,000 square foot office building,” Patrick M. Crimmins, the vice president of Tighe & Bond, wrote in documents filed for the development team. “The project will include associated site improvements, such as parking, pedestrian access, utilities, storm water management, lighting and landscaping. The site will be accessed via the driveway on Route 1.”
