Eversource Launches Summer Internship Program

Eversource's first class of students enrolled in the Electrical Lineworker Certificate Program successfully completed their first semester of study and have kicked-off summer internships with the company. A partnership between Eversource, Manchester Community College, the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Unions 104 and 1837, the program will prepare students for employment in a variety of electrical fields, with an emphasis on electrical lineworker responsibilities and tasks.

"The summer internship portion of the program will give our students more exposure to all facets of the company, including substations, the line department, our Systems Operation Center, and communications," says Karl Douglas, NH manager of regional operations. "These students will get out in the field to observe employees at work, riding along with people who are skilled in their craft and finding out what it's like to spend a day in the life of a lineworker."

The paid internships will focus on developing students' climbing skills, an understanding of the company's culture and focus on safety, and obtaining a Commercial Driver's License. Additionally, students will continue to learn how to use equipment and tools to safely complete electric overhead and underground construction. Upon completion of the program, students may apply to Eversource's 18-month apprenticeship program for the opportunity to begin a career at Eversource work centers throughout the state, including Tilton, Keene, Hooksett, Nashua, Derry, Rochester and Newport.

"I'm most excited to get out into the field and see what it's like doing the work," says Josh Chapman of Plymouth, a graduate of Plymouth Regional High School. "Throughout the first semester, we completed a lot of hands-on training. The more I learn, the more excited I get about the work. I like the idea of helping people in the community by getting their lights back on and keeping them warm during a major storm."
