Cog Railway Proposes Hotel on Mt. Washington

Published Monday Dec 5, 2016

Cog Railway headed up Mount Washington in the fall.

The Cog Railway announced plans to build a hotel and restaurant two-thirds of the way up Mount Washington along the railroad track on land the railway owns. Currently the only places to stay on the mountain are the Lake of the Clouds Hut, which houses 90 hikers, and the Mount Washington Observatory, where a small number of people can come and stay for weather related trips in the winter.

The first Summit House on Mt. Washington opened in 1852. After an addition was built in 1853, the Summit House could accommodate 60 guests overnight, with a dining room for 150. In 1873, the second, enlarged, Summit House opened and survived until the 1908 fire, which destroyed nearly everything on the summit, according to whitemountainhistory.org.

The proposal for the new hotel was the subject of a Coos County Planning Board Meeting on Dec. 8. Read more about it here at The Concord Monitor.
