Daryl Luter, president of Fulcrum Associates, considers construction an art form. “We have this incredible ability to transform community landscapes,” says Luter. “There’s real meaning behind what we do. It’s not just four walls and a roof. There’s kind of a heartbeat to a building and knowing that what we do helps to contribute to economic growth and people being able to provide for themselves, their families, their employees. It makes you feel really good about coming into the front door of Fulcrum.”
Luter started as a teen laborer at the Amherst-based construction management firm, which was founded by his father in 1989. “There’s not a lot of organizations out there where the person sitting in my seat started with a hammer and a broom,” he says. “I’m very proud of that.”
Since becoming the second-generation leader, Luter focused on developing a leadership team. That gets to the core of what he says is the company’s key differentiator: people and relationships. It’s how the team approaches each project.
“It’s understanding that in every interaction you have, whether it’s employee to employee, a [project manager] to an owner, superintendent to a subcontractor foreman, you’re talking to a human being. You’re talking to a person. You’re talking to somebody who has lived and is living a life full of all the same challenges that you’ve ever had or will ever have,” Luter says. “When you can humanize the interaction, that’s when you can really build trust because you’re seeing a person for a person.”
Over its history, the team at Fulcrum Associates has worked on projects for industries as diverse as academic and life sciences to residential, retail, industrial and more. Nearly 40% of the company’s projects come from repeat clients and partners, Luter says.
Over the last year, Fulcrum raised $18,000 through its annual charitable golf tournament to benefit the NH Food Bank and Friends of Aine. Over the past nine years the company has raised more than $250,000 for the NH Food Bank. Other community initiatives at the company include volunteering time and resources to support local nonprofits and winter
coat drives.
Fulcrum’s team also invests heavily in workforce development, supporting NH Construction Career Days and working with local career and technical education programs to expose students to careers in the skilled trades.
