Belletetes Expands Throughout New Hampshire

Published Wednesday Sep 25, 2013

With multiple lumberyards under their belt, Belletetes, Inc., headquartered in Jaffrey, NH is growing stronger. This past summer, Belletetes added two more locations in Andover and Sunapee to their other five with the acquisition of R.P. Johnson and Son. Much like Belletetes, R.P. Johnson was a family-owned business with more than112 years in the industry. This expansion puts Belletetes Inc. at 213 part- and full-time employees.

Since 2008, Belletetes had been holding off on expansion. But when the opportunity presented itself and the owner of R.P. Johnson, Steve Johnson, was looking to sell his, Belletetes was willing to discuss. This would be Belletetes second time acquiring a business, with the first being Ashland Lumber in Ashland nearly 10 years ago. The reputation Belletetes made for themselves through the purchase of Ashland Lumber is what made Johnson approach the company.

R.P. Johnson and Son had about 35 employees and knew that with the sale of the company, it would be hard to find another business willing to keep their long-time employees. But with opportunity comes risk and it certainly wasn’t an immediate or easy decision.

R.P. Johnson and Son had average annual of about $9 million, which would raise Belletetes Inc. to a $60 million a year company. That wasn’t the only reason Belletetes saw opportunity; the location of the two facilities was ideal to the company as it bridged the gap of their Ashland location to the other locations in Jaffrey, Peterborough, Nashua and Winchendon, Mass.
