President and CEO Bill Condron says customers can buy anything The Granite Group sells within five miles. But the reason they choose The Granite Group is its employees. That’s why the company makes taking care of those employees a priority.
It starts with empowerment. Each branch has the freedom to manage teams as they see fit and do what they think needs to be done to serve customers.
Even during this pandemic, the company has not docked a single day of paid time off (PTO) from employees. If someone is out because of an ill family member, needing to get tested, experiencing symptoms, recovering or quarantining, the time off was labeled as “COVIDQ” to indicate no PTO deductions, pay as usual.
The Granite Group invests in employee development, offering $5,250 in annual tuition reimbursement. And, in 2020, it launched TGG University. Twelve employees from a group of 60 nominations were selected to work with an outside consultant and learn skills to help them move up the ranks. Upon graduation, each was surprised with a $2,500 bonus.
The Granite Group also offers a trainee program designed for recent college graduates, those exiting the military or others with limited experience to aggressively train them to step into an operations management or sales role within two years.
Each year, a team member and a manager are selected for the company’s CORE Award for exemplifying the company’s values, receiving $2,500 and a trip to a tropical island.
