Want to Get Ahead?

Published Monday Jul 9, 2012

Laurie Schloff, a senior coaching partner with Brookline, Massachusetts-based The Speech Improvement Company, asks, Do you care about your career? If you do, then she suggests you keep your clothes on.

Summertime has just begun. And Schloff says summer can be a terrific time for enhancing your career. While colleagues are on vacation, do some extra research or volunteer for a special project. Your manager will appreciate it when she returns.

But, Schloff says, don't let the heat go to your head. Though it's tempting to flip-flop around the office donning the flimsiest, most casual clothing in your closet, bear in mind that, if you care about your career (or even if you want to hold onto your job in these tough times), your every move matters. That means no flip flops, cleavage or skirts at
thigh level, and definitely no shorts. Also, avoid overly personal water cooler conversation that increases as vacations thin out office and the boss may be away.

And don't let the heat make you hot-headed. Professional behavior, including using your best communication skills, is expected regardless of what the thermometer says!
