Portsmouth Rotary Awards $39,000

Despite the challenges of this year’s pandemic, the Rotary Club of Portsmouth will be distributing $39,000 in scholarship awards to local high school seniors. Thirteen students of the Class of 2020 will receive $3,000 to use toward college expenses.

Committee co-chairs Lindsey Reid and Tristan Shanley say they were particularly impressed with the students’ optimism and expressions of hope, during such an uncertain time and felt all applicants were more than deserving, often balancing school, sports, volunteerism and part time work, with grace.

The awards ceremony at the Portsmouth Country Club was cancelled this year in light of COVID-19, so the winners were announced through Zoom.

The Bill Genimatas Scholarship was presented to Jacob Boutin, Portsmouth High School (PHS), who will attend Suffolk University.

The Joseph J Shanley Scholarships went to Lillian Murray, PHS, who will attend University of NH; Riley Huneke, PHS, who will attend University of Southern Maine; Jack Russo, PHS, who will attend St. Lawrence University in NY; and Kathleen McCafferty, PHS, who will attend North Carolina State University.

Rotary Club of Portsmouth Scholarships were presented to Rachel Goldberg PHS, who will attend Colby College; Emma Savage, PHS, who will attend University of NH; Adison Scully, PHS, who will attend College of Charleston; Emma Katona, PHS, who will attend Lesley University; Jenifer Sidhwa, PHS, who will attend University of NH; Ella Lukacz, PHS, who will attend University of NH; Gemma Pohl, PHS, who will attend University of Miami; and Austin Phan, St. Thomas Aquinas in Dover, who will attend.
